Wales backs smart energy tech with £8.27m funding

24 projects across Wales have received funding to cut carbon emissions and save money on energy, which can then be reinvested in the communities they serve.

The funding comes from Ynni Cymru, a Welsh Government programme that helps communities, businesses and public services create and use their own clean energy.

The funding will support a range of technology-enabled renewable energy projects, including smart local energy systems, battery storage, solar power installations and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Projects across all of Wales are set to benefit, with charities, community organisations, schools and colleges, healthcare services, businesses and local energy groups all receiving funding.

This latest round of funding will provide £8.27 million to 24 organisations across Wales.

Since its launch in 2023, Ynni Cymru has supported more than 80 projects across Wales.

In Pembrokeshire, Renewable Power Pembrokeshire is helping ensure the benefits of renewable energy stay close to home. The project has been awarded £997,566 to generate electricity locally and allow nearby businesses and community buildings to use more locally produced power, increasing their energy resilience and potentially saving money on their bills.

Through a Smart Local Energy System, the project will use technology to better manage locally generated renewable energy. One local laundry business, Snow White, is expected to save between £40,000 and £60,000 a year on energy bills.

In Powys, community-owned Llanidloes District Energy Local Club is set to receive £941,280 to turn locally generated energy into local benefits. The money will fund new solar panels, battery storage and electric vehicle charging points, allowing participating households to make greater use of renewable electricity generated within their community. By using more locally generated power and reducing reliance on electricity from the national grid, households are expected to save around £368 a year on their energy bills.

Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, Adam Price, said: "From helping businesses and households lower their energy bills to supporting cleaner festivals and events, these projects show how renewable energy can deliver practical benefits for people and communities across Wales.

"They're joined by schools, healthcare services, community hubs, charities and local businesses across Wales that are all finding new ways to use energy more efficiently and direct more resources towards the people they support.

"Ynni Cymru is delivering the Welsh Government's vision for greener, cheaper energy, owned and used by people and communities across Wales."
