Falkirk Council is to become the first local authority in Scotland to operate a fleet of electric dump trucks, as eight electric Ford Transit Tippers and four electric Four Luton vans are to replace the existing 12 diesel vehicles.
This will also make Falkirk Council the first local authority in the UK to operate electric Luton vans, which are to be phased in within the next week.
These new electric vehicles are set to support important Council services by helping the Building Maintenance Department complete various essential services, such as emergency and non-emergency repairs.
Additionally, the Street Cleansing teams will use the tippers for cleaning streets, pathways, and other public spaces, as well as managing litter removal, fly-tipping clearance, and serving public litter bins. Switching to electric tippers will be at a lower cost, especially in reduced fuel expenses and lower maintenance costs compared to traditional diesel vehicles.
Councillor Bryan Deakin, portfolio holder for climate change, said: “This switch to electric vehicles demonstrates our strong commitment to reducing emissions and creating healthier communities. We’re proud to be leading the way in sustainable local government operations.
“Our Council was the first authority to order these innovative vehicles from Ford’s production line which now sets a benchmark for others to follow. As these electric vehicles begin circulation, our community takes another decisive step towards a clearer, greener future.”
